What is Villanova University?
Villanova University is the name of a private, nonprofit educational institution founded in 1842 in Pennsylvania. VU is located in Radnor, USA. The university is affiliated with the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU) and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU).

In terms of visual identity, Villanova University is very traditional and ornate. The university still uses the logo, based on the historical crest, with the “Veritas, Unitas, Caritas” motto (translates from Latin as “Truth, Unity, Love”) written under an ornate graphical composition.

???? – 2000

The old logo of Villanova University was composed of a white contoured seal, placed against a striped blue background on the left from the two-leveled inscription, where the yellow “Villanova” was written in an elegant cursive with an elongated tail of the “V”, and the blue “University” was set in a classy serif font, with no inclination.

2000 – 2004

In 2000 the badge of the university was redesigned, bringing it a more ornate version of the seal, enclosed into a blue circular frame with white lettering around its perimeter. The seal was placed on the left from the refined lettering in two levels, with both lines set in one shade of blue, and executed in one font — a sophisticated cursive.

2004 – Today

The Villanova University logo is based on the historical seal, which is also used by the university today, as an additional badge. The seal is drawn in a roundel, with a thick blue frame, where the bold white lettering is written around the perimeter. The white central part of the emblem features an image of a blue book with a red burning heart above it and a golden cross on top. The composition is enclosed between two green parts of a wreath, complemented by a white ribbon with the motto, and the “1842” datemark at the bottom.

As for the modern version of the badge, it is set in blue and white, with the contoured emblem simplified in the number of elements and cleaned contours, set on the right from the three-leveled inscription in an elegant serif font.

Font and color

The bold and stable uppercase lettering from the primary logo of Villanova University is set in an elegant serif font with the full-shaped contours of the characters and sharp small serifs on the ends of the bars. The closest fonts to the one, used in this insignia, are, probably, Trajan Bold, or Transcend Medium, with sophisticated shapes and distinctive lines of the letters.

As for the color palette of Villanova University’s visual identity, it is based on a sleek and bright combination of blue and white, which represents loyalty, responsibility, and confidence. White is also a color of openness and trustworthiness, while blue points to the professional qualities of the educational institution.
