What is UUM?
UUM is an abbreviation, standing for the Universiti Utara Malaysia, an educational institution established in 1984. The university is mainly known for its management disciplines and College of Business, but also has such directions as Art and Sciences, Law, Government, and International Studies.

In terms of visual identity, Universiti Utara Malaysia has never changed its elegant seal, introduced at the very beginning of the University’s history. This badge with elegant details and the UUM motto is usually accompanied by modern sans-serif lettering, which adds a contemporary feeling and confidence in today and tomorrow.

1984 – Today

The UUM logo, used by the university since the middle of the 1980s, featured a vertically oriented oval medallion with a thick yellow frame in a blue outline. The full name of the university, Universiti Utara Malaysia, is written along the top part of the frame, in blue capital letters of a stable and classy serif font, and is separated by two solid blue dots from the motto of the university, “Ilmu, Budi, Bakti”, which means “Knowledge, Virtue, Service”.

The central part of the medallion features a plain white background with a solid blue crest drawn over it. The crest, outlined in yellow, has a stylized image of a golden spike in the center, and a decorative composition, drawn in thick white lines around it. When used with the logotype, the seal is placed on the left from a two-leveled inscription with the enlarged UUM separated from the small title case “Universiti Utara Malaysia” by a thin horizontal line.

Font and color

The bold and clean lettering from the official logo of the Universiti Utara Malaysia is set in a modern sans-serif font with distinctive contours and straight cuts of the lines. The closest fonts to the one, used in this insignia, are, probably, Humanist 521 Std Bold, or Gill Sans Nova Bold.

As for the color palette of the UUM visual identity, it is based on fresh and light hues of blue and yellow, with an addition of white, which brings air as a sense of reliability to the badge. Blue is a color of confidence and professionalism, while yellow elements add energy and progressiveness to this traditional and elegant composition.
