Meaning and history

Utah State Aggies is an athletic program, which represents Utah State University, a public educational institution, founded in Logan, Utah, in 1888. Today the university has more than 27 thousand students and almost two thousand academic staff.

The athletic program of Utah State University consists of 16 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in such sports disciplines as Basketball, Football, Golf, Tennis, and several others. All teams of the program are members of the Mountain West Conference.

1966 – 1973

The Utah State Aggies logo, designed in 1966, featured a dark-blue and white color palette and a bold geometric composition with the trapezoid contour of a building in a thick outline, a solid blue circle in its upper part, and a three-leveled inscription crossing it. The lettering had its middle, “State”, line enlarged and emboldened, with the whole wordmark set in a slanted sans-serif font.

1973 – 1992

In 1973 the Aggies logo was redesigned, and this was when the Bull first appeared on the badge. It was a bold blue contoured image of a Bull’s head withsteam coming out of its nostrils. The Bull was the only element of the badge, with no accompanying lettering or framing. This version of the badge stayed unchanged for almost twenty years.

1992 – 1995

The redesign of 1992 has introduced a new design concept for the Utah State Aggies logo, with the contoured bull jumping through the enlarged extra-bold letter “U”, set in solid blue. The bold blue serif “A” was drawn on the Bull’s back body, and the uppercase contoured “State” was set vertically along the right bar of the “U”.

1995 – 2001

The emblem for the athletic teams, created in 1996, featured a funny yet powerful combination of a caricature bull image and a two-leveled stylized inscription placed over the drawing. The color palette was based on gray and blue, with the Bull in silver-gray and a thin blue outline, and the wordmark in white and gray, with some thin dark yellow accents.

2001 – 2012

The redesign of 2001 introduced a new logo, with no drawings. It was all text-based, with the white “State” in the lowercase written vertically along the right bar of the enlarged stylized letter “U” in solid blue with a double blue and white outline. The lines of the letters were all smooth and rounded, though due to the thickness and massiveness, the emblem still looked strong and confident.

2012 – 2014

The badge, used by the Utah State Aggies program in 2012 — 2014 featured a modern minimalistic composition with the arched heavy “State” horizontally crossing the enlarged stylized “U” in solid blue with a thin calm-gold internal contouring. This version of the logo has become a basis for several future redesigns, creating a powerful and confident look for the athletic teams’ logo.

2014 – 2019

In 2014 the Aggies logo, created in 2012, was slightly refined. First of all, the color palette of both elements got darkened and intensified. Secondly, the composition itself got a bit wider and shorter, getting a more stable and strong look, and reflecting the power and confidence of the program’s teams.

2014 – Today

The large “U” is the centerpiece of the current Utah State Aggies logo, which was unveiled in 2012. The curves of the glyph are closer to the square shape than those of a regular “U” and there are no serifs. The word “State” goes across the letter.
