UNLV Rebels is the collegiate athletic program of the University of Nevada, located in Las Vegas, Nevada State. The program was established at the end of the 1950s and is best known for its men’s basketball team.
UNLV Rebels is the athletic program, which represents the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a public educational institution, which was founded in 1958, and today has more than 30 thousand students and a thousandacademic staff.
As for the athletic program of the University of Nevada, it is composed of 16 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in such sports disciplines as Baseball, Basketball, Football, Soccer, and several others. The teams of the program are members of the Mountain West Conference.
The original UNLV Rebels logo was introduced in 1967 and stayed with the program for more than five years. It was a black-and-white caricature of a winking wolf, wearing a cap. The image was accompanied bybold uppercase “Rebels” lettering in a slightly narrowed sans-serif font, arched under the wolf’s portrait.
The logo, created for the athletic program in 1974, was super cool and minimalistic. It was a black-and-white composition with a solid black circle as the central element. The circle was framed with the roundel made of the letters “UNLV” set in a custom and fancy sans-serif font. The first try at this badge lasted for less than a year, but later the Rebels decide to come back to it.
The second attempt at the stylish geometric logo happened for Rebels in 1977. This is when the program decided to replace its three-dimensional badge with the new mascot with a monochrome circle surrounded by the UNLV lettering, introduced in 1974. This time the badge stayed with the Rebels for longer.
The updated logo, which was introduced in 2006, resolved the two problems of its predecessor: the mustache became half-hidden, while the lettering became better legible.
The redesign of 2009 has played with the colors of the Rebels badge, darkening up the hat of a mustache man. With the black hat, the whole image started to look brighter and more distinctive, showing the power and confidence of the program’s teams.
The badge of the Rebels got another version in 2017. The portrait of a man was removed from the composition, leaving just the black hat with gray shadows on it. The arched uppercase “UNLV” lettering was also redesigned, with the letters set in red with no outline, and the typeface changed to a more delicate and elegant serif.
The reason why the mascot known under the nickname Hey Reb! disappeared from the new UNLV Rebel logo (2017) was that he has been considered racist (he resembles a confederate soldier).
The team, which is part of Mountain West Conference, has made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. Their head coach is Stan Stolte, while their home arena is Earl Wilson Stadium in Paradise, Nevada.
In 1990, the men’s basketball team of the University of Nevada became the NCAA Tournament Champions, which has been their highest achievement so far. They have competed in the NCAA Tournaments on 20 occasions, as of 2019.
The women’s team reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen in 1989. They have had eight NCAA Tournament appearances.
The UNLV Rebels were pretty successful during their time in Division II. But since they were promoted to Division I, their results have been less prominent. Their home games are played at Sam Boyd Stadium.
