Televisa, officially known as Grupo Televisa, is a major media company based in Mexico that has been a significant player in the television broadcasting industry for decades. It produced numerous popular telenovelas, many of which have been adapted in various countries. Canal de las Estrellas is Televisa’s flagship channel and is the most widely viewed channel in Mexico. It features a mix of telenovelas, variety shows, news programs, and sports. Televisa’s content has had a significant influence on Latin American and Mexican culture. In recent years, it has embraced digital platforms.

Meaning and History

The history of Televisa began with the founding of the “XEW” radio station in 1930 by Emilio Azcárraga V. It was one of the first radio stations in Mexico to broadcast in Spanish. In 1973, the company, known then as TeleSistema Mexicano, merged with another broadcasting company “Televisión Independiente de México” to form Televisa. In the 1980s, Televisa solidified its position as the largest Spanish-language broadcaster. A partnership with Univisión since 2010s has expanded its reach into the U.S. market significantly. Univision and Televisa completed their $4.8 billion merger in early 2022.

What is Televisa?
Televisa is one of the largest Spanish-language content producers in the world. Besides telenovelas, it also creates films, news programming, sports broadcasting, and kids’ content. Televisa is recognized not only for its extensive catalog of telenovelas and entertainment shows but also for its adaptability in an increasingly digital world.

1955 – 1973

A minimalistic and bold logo was created for the original TeleSistema Mexicano company. It features the name acronym with a smooth, wave-like “S” running diagonally across the logo. Such a simple design opened up many possibilitiese for the company and could be used across various channels without modifications.

1968 – 1973

This is a logo of another company, Televisión Independiente de México, which became part of Televisa. The emblem creates an image of a strong company. It has the name initials create a monogram. The latter looks like a fork with horizontal bar at the top and a white circle in the center. Unless one knows who the logo belongs to, it would be hard to decipher.

1973 – 2000

Designed by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, this logo represents the international reach of this Spanish language TV company. It has a black oval shape with a white one in the center. Both have white and black lines running across them. Besides creating an association with the globe, it might seem that these are window blinds with the moon and night sky peeking through. The Televisa is portrayed as a window into the world.

1973 – 1980

A stylized Televisa inscription has been added to the oval emblem. It is done using a bold, geometric font of a light gray color. The Oval emblem also got some color. Instead of black, it now features a light olive green color. While the light gray is a rather neutral color, the olive green is surley a surprising and unique choice.

1981 – 1990

The name introduced in the last version is gone. The color palette, though, got much brighter. The yellow sun and orange base create a positive and friendly impression. The logo looks eye-catching and memorable and shows that there is a bright future waiting for the company.

1990 – 2000

The logo has not changed much since the update in 1981. The only difference is the addition of the name in all lowercase letters of a contrasting black color. The inscription goes well with the oval sun emblem thanks to straight strokes and rounded terminals.

1998 – 2000

Another update rolled in 1998. This time, the logo acquired a three-dimensional appearance with the sun being brought to the front and having a golden sphere shape. There was something very different about this version. It was obvious that the company desired to look contemporary, but it did not last for too long.

2001 – 2016

A new color has been introduced by Lippincott & Margulies, who worked on the new logo design. The blue has already been used by the company on Televisa Deportes and Noticieros Televisa. The color palette turned out to be a bold and eye-catching combination, perfect for modern designs. They also changed the font to      Helvetica Neue Heavy, capitalizing the first letter. The designers were able to update the logo while preserving a recognizable brand image.

2012 – 2016 (secondary), 2016 – Today (primary)

A monochrome logo version has been used for several years as a secondary version. It became a primary logo in 2016. The lgoo looks more professional as the colors are not competing for attention.

2022 – Today

Since 2022, when Televisa became part of Univision Communications, a corporate logo features a black and white color palette and a name to the right of the oval emblem. The “Grupo Televisa” inscription is still printed using Helvetica Neue Heavy font but the name is split between two lines to ensure that the logo has balanced proportions.

Font and Color

The color palette has changed several times. Originally, the company went for black and white logo. This color palette returned in 2022. For over thirty five years, the lgoo also had bright yellow and orange colors. These created a warm, friendly, and eye-catching brand image. At the beginning of a new century, the viewers also saw the addition of deep blue, which replaced black.

Since 1990 and up to 2000, the logo featured a geometric font similar to PCap Terminal Condensed by PCap Terminal (Neale Davidson). After that, several logo versions featured a sans-serif Helvetica Neue Heavy font. With an exception of early monograms, the company used easy-to-read sans-serif font that created an image of a serious, professional media company.
