Meaning and History

Syracuse University’s history dates back to 1870. It originated from the merging of several educational institutions, including a school established by the Methodist Episcopal Church and a number of independent colleges.  After a devastating fire in 1872, the university moved to Syracuse, which is where its name comes from. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Syracuse University experienced rapid growth, with the establishment of new colleges and programs. The university also became known for its strong athletic programs, particularly in football, with the Orangemen winning several national championships. In the second half of the 20th century, it continued to expand and diversify.  With a diverse student body from all 50 states and over 100 countries, the university continues to attract top talent from around the world.

1870 – Today

The primary logo of the university consists of its name, Syracuse University, printed in one linewith the first letters capitalized. The simplicity of the design and a bright orange color make this logo quite distinctive. This orange color is significant to the university, as it is one of the school’s official colors, along with blue. The inscription has a clean and readable appearance without loosing its classic charm and formal appearance.

Font and Color

A classic serif font with elegant curves and moderate stroke contrast has been used to print the institution’s name. The font has a traditional feel to it, reflecting the long history of the establishment. It somewhat resembles serif fonts such as Iowan Old Style BT Roman font and Bonobo Regular font.

Besides being one of the official school colors, the orange is a symbol of confidence, enthusiasm, and optimism. The orange reflects determination, willpower, and excitement of every member of the university as they strive to achieve success. It exudes warmth and joy, grabbing attention and providing emotional strength. This color is also fresh, youthful, and creative.
