What is San Diego State Aztecs?
The San Diego State Aztecs embody the athletic spirit of San Diego State University, marking their territory in NCAA Division I. Renowned for their fervent competitiveness, the Aztecs excel across several sports, with notable prominence in football and basketball. Their enduring legacy is built on a foundation of consistent national tournament appearances and a deep-rooted tradition of athletic excellence.

1961 – 1982

The university’s athletic program comprises 17 teams (six men’s, 13 women’s), including football, baseball, and basketball teams.

The old emblem that was introduced in 1961 and was used until 1982 featured an abstract depiction of an Aztec, a representative of a Mesoamerican culture of the same name that was highly developed in central Mexico in the post-classic era from 1300 to 1521. The Aztec on the old logo was mostly red, while the white streaks divided the image into meaningful parts.

1983 – 1996

In 1983-1996, the athletic program adopted a logo that was less abstract and richer in color. Here, the Aztec’s face was turned slightly to us; both his face and the headdress looked more detailed. There was some depth, too.

1997 – 2001

The San Diego State University Aztecs logo used in 1997-2001 featured the side view of a completely different Aztec. This time, he had a richer headdress and a red face. The nickname of the teams could be seen below.

2002 – 2012

The 2002 emblem was a large “S” interlaced with a “D,” which formed an arrow and a bow.

2013 – Today

The current version (since 2013) looks almost the same, although there have been a couple of alterations.
