Professional Women’s Hockey League is a women’s professional ice hockey league. It was established to enhance the visibility and professionalism of women’s hockey and to create competitive opportunities for players. The league focuses on promoting the sport, supporting athletes, and fostering the growth of women’s hockey. It built a united base that would inspire and cultivate future generations of female hockey athletes.
The PWHL was officially launched in the fall of 2022, following the closure of the NWHL and the Canadian Women’s Hockey League in prior years. Originally, these two leagues battled for talent, resources, and fan engagement, leading to weak and disjoined support for women’s hockey. PWHL’s formation was a significant step forward after years of struggle for recognition, funding, and a stable existence in the sports. The PWHL aims to provide a professional league format that includes multiple teams based in major markets across North America.
What is PWHL?
PWHL is a Professional Women’s Hockey League. The goal of the PWHL was to unify the efforts and create a stronger, consolidated league that could provide opportunities for players and visibility for women’s hockey. One of the primary focuses of the league is to prioritize player development and support.
The logo, which was designed by Younts Design Inc., features the league’s initials in a bold, modern font, emphasizing its identity and commitment to growing women’s hockey. All the letters are capitalized and printed using clean, straight strokes. The letter “W” is stylized as two crossed hockey sticks to further strengthen the association with the hockey sport. With a mission to elevate women’s hockey on a global stage, the design was made quite minimalistic to appeal to a wider audience and withstand time.
The slanted and slightly rounded terminals not only remind of hockey sticks but also reflect the speed and smooth movements of the hockey players. The font used in the logo, besides the custom “W”, resembles a modified Remora Sans W5 Bold font for Mac in TrueType or Tactic Round Exd Blk by Miller Type Foundry.
Purple is a color that blends the calmness of blue and the energy of red. It is also historically associated with nobility and luxury, so the use of this color in a logo can convey a sense of authority and leadership on the field. Other associations include ambition, independence, and pride.
