Simple as it may seem at first glance, the Panerai logo has a deeper symbolism behind it. To understand it, you need to learn a bit more about the company’s products.

Meaning and history

The beginning of the Panerai history dates back to 1860. The company, called Officine Panerai back then, was established in Florence, Italy, by Giovanni Panerai. It has been headquartered in Florence ever since, although the watches themselves are made in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Today, the brand belongs to Compagnie Financière Richemont S.A.

What does the watch logo mean?

One explanation seems pretty obvious – you can surely read the letters “O” and “P” in the emblem, the initials of the company name Officine Panerai.

And yet, that’s not all. The two arrows also have a symbolic meaning. To decipher it, you need to know that the brand manufactures underwater products and landing aid systems. The arrow going down symbolizes the first group (underwater products), from wristwatches to tank level probes, while the arrow going up symbolizes the second group (landing aid systems), including, for instance, such products as Deck landing systems and Helipad lighting systems.

The logo of the watch brand Panerai was developed by the Architectural Office of Florence at the beginning of the 1980s. The original versions, which had a rounded shape, weren’t approved by Eng. Dino Zei, who was the company CEO back then. Together with the brand’s Technical Department, he added the arrow symbol to the Panerai logo.
