The Old Dominion Monarchs and Lady Monarchs are the names of the athletic teams representing Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
Located in the coastal city of Norfolk, Virginia, Old Dominion University’s history dates back to 1930, and today the university is one of the few public universities to be honored with the Carnegie Foundation’s “Doctoral: Highest Research Activity” award. Overall, it is a very popular and strong university, which has a wide variety of academic programs and approximately 125,000 alumni in all 50 states and 67 countries.
Apart from the strong and strict academic program, Old Dominion University is also well known for its athletic program, called the Old Dominion Monarchs. It consists of 18 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the first Division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, as a part of the Sun Belt Conference. The sports disciplines, sponsored by the Old Dominion University are quite standard: Baseball, Basketball, Swimming, and Soccer; however the Monarchs are also known for their Sailing and Rowing teams.
The Old Dominion Monarchs logo has remained consistent in the “royal” theme since at least 1983. Back then, the university introduced an emblem featuring an abstract lion’s head wearing a crown.
In 2003, a more realistic depiction of a crowned lion was developed for the logo. The palette was updated, too – it now featured a nobler shade of blue paired with muted gold.
We should also mention the version of the emblem featuring a crown over the letters “ODU.”
