The idea behind Nextdoor is to unite and get to know neighbors who live in private homes in small towns or separate neighborhoods in a large city. Each such neighborhood forms a closed “private” social network, which cannot be joined by people from outside.

Meaning and history

Nextdoor is a social network that connects neighbors based on their location. The platform allows people who live in the same neighborhood to share information and communicate. Nextdoor isn’t one of those social networks where people post tons of useless information. It’s specific, honed in on everyday needs. On Nextdoor, you can find information about garage sales, rooms for rent, and so on.

The network posts information ranging from lost keys to photos of thieving raccoons raiding homes. It is also a platform where neighbors share recommendations. Nextdoor places a high priority on neighborhood safety. The app makes it easy to share information about any suspicious activity. There is also a feature that allows you to send an emergency message that will be seen by everyone in the neighborhood at once.

The company was founded in 2008 and is based in San Francisco, California. In 2010, it created the first lines of code for a prototype, originally called Neighborly, whose idea was to create a core fan base, a crowdsourced online almanac of professional and college athletes. Nextdoor’s beta version as a neighborhood app was launched in the United States in October 2011, and even before its official release, more than 100 neighborhoods were already active. Today Nextdoor is available in 11 countries, where it is used by almost 90 million people.

Nextdoor advertising services are popular with local real estate professionals who can talk about local market trends. And local service providers can ask for recommendations from Nextdoor members and boost their rankings. For companies looking for opportunities to market themselves, a Nextdoor business page is a good way to promote themselves and increase visibility.

What is Nextdoor?
Nextdoor is the name of a hyperlocal social network for people living in on neighborhood. In fact, the app acts as a digital bulletin board for neighbors. Nextdoor was created in 2011 in San Francisco, and today is already operating in several countries around the world.

In terms of visual identity, Nextdoor is simple, friendly, and quite modern. The social network went through a major redesign in 2020, refusing the initial idea but keeping the overall mood for better recognizability.

2011 – 2020

The original Nextdoor logo, introduced in 2011, has stayed with the platform for the first nine years of its history. It was a laconic and stable composition, based on a geometric title case lettering in a distinctive sans-serif typeface and a minimalistic emblem, depicting a schematic silhouette of a house with with a chimney on its roof. Both parts of the logo were executed in one shade of green. For the icon the app used only the graphical emblem.

2020 – Today

The redesign of 2020 has completely reworked the Nextdoor visual identity concept. Now the social network’s badge is composed of a bold lowercase wordmark in a modern sans-serif typeface; with the first character stylized: the curved tail, resembling the chimney from the previous logo, coming out of the “N”s vertical bar. The green of the composition was lightened up, which made the logo look more vivid and friendly.

Font and color

The bold lowercase lettering from the primary Nextdoor logo is set in a modern geometric typeface, which has a lot in common with such fonts as Oktah Neue, Carmen Sans, or Mustica Pro, with just the first character stylized.

As for the color palette of the Nextdoor visual identity, it is based on a delightful shade of green, which stands for connection, communication, growth, and success. This shade works as a great eye-catcher and makes the app stand out in the list of social networks.
