The New York Jets is an American professional football team, whose history started in the late 1950s. Today, the team resides in the New York metropolitan area.

Brand Overview

Although the Jets are a franchise from New York City, one of the most iconic and influential cities in the world, they don’t have many fans compared to other NFL clubs. In recent years, the Jets have remained in the shadow of their neighbors, the New York Giants. That’s understandable, since the team only won the Super Bowl once, in 1968, and the last of the Jets’ 14 playoff appearances was not yesterday, either — in 2010. The most “recent” win for the New York Jets was in 2002 when the club won the Division championship of AFC East.

The New York Jets were founded in 1959 as the Titans of New York, lasting only a couple of years under that name. The franchise was founded by Lamar Hunt, Bud Adams, and Harry Wismer. It was the latter who chose the original name for the team, pointing to the club’s main rivals, the New York Giants, and saying that the titans are stronger than the giants. Perhaps if the club had kept that name, they could have been stronger than the Giants, but, alas, it didn’t work out.

The team managed to please its fans by winning the Super Bowl only once, in the late 1960s, and gave little reason to be proud after that.

Meaning and history

The history of the American football club New York Jets began with the New York Titans, which was one of the founders of the American Football League that emerged in 1960.

The team was not very successful during its early seasons, but in the late 1960s quarterback, Joe Namath led it to prominence. In 1968, the club won its first and only AFL championship, earning the right to play for Super Bowl 3 against the NFL champions Baltimore Colts.

The Jets defeated their rivals, proving that the AFL was a serious competitor to the NFL, which was considered a senior league. After the merger of the leagues in 1970, The Jets occupied a familiar spot in the middle of the standings until a series of club wins in the 1980s.

After average results in the 1990s, the Jets re-engaged in the championship battle under the coaching of Bill Parcells. Parcells led the team to its most successful season since the league merger in 1998, in which the club finished with a 12-4 record, and to the AFC championship game, where the Jets lost to the Denver Broncos.

What is New York Jets?
New York Jets is the name of a professional football club from the United States, playing in the National Football League. The team was founded in 1960, and by today has become one of the most popular American football clubs in the world.

1960 – 1962

The logo features a dynamic and heroic figure, reminiscent of a classic American football player, poised as if he is bursting into action. Clad in a dark uniform with prominent shoulder pads and a helmet, the player’s silhouette is outlined in white, creating a stark contrast against the dark background and highlighting the motion and physicality associated with the sport. To the right of the figure, the words “THE TITANS OF NEW YORK” arc gracefully in a bold, block font. The name “TITANS” is significantly larger, emphasizing the team’s identity, and is rendered in a gradient of gold, suggesting strength and excellence. The smaller text, “OF NEW YORK,” below in a straightforward black font, grounds the logo with a sense of location and pride. The entire image captures the essence of a team with a robust and commanding presence, ready to take on the challenges of the gridiron.

1963

The firs Jets logo was introduced in 1963. It had a shape of a green airplane with ‘Jets’ written on it in white caps.

1964 — 1966

The next version was introduced in 1964 and was in use until 1966. This logo turned out to be the ancestor of the team’s today’s logo. It was a green outline of a football with ‘Jets’ written in green letters on the foreground, ‘NY’ written in green outlines on the background, and a small football at the bottom.

1967 — 1977

The next one was introduced in 1967 and was in use until 1977. It was a white-to-green inversion of its predecessor.

1978 — 1997

In 1978, a new design was accepted: it was utterly different from the previous ones and much more simplistic. It was a ‘Jets’ wordmark with a wing-like figure above.

1998 — 2019

The NY Jets logo, which was accepted in 1998, is a modified version of the 1966 version. Unlike its ancestor, it is oval-shaped, not football-shaped. Thee design was chosen by Bill Parcells, who was the team coach at the moment. All these logos were designed to express the team’s jet power, with which it moves ahead towards new victories.

2019 — 2024

The current Jets logo has a little more elegant and streamlined appearance. It still features the club’s name and the small football at the bottom. The football’s appearance has changed.

2024 – Today

In this logo, the visual focus is the bold and futuristic depiction of the name “JETS,” which is presented in a thick, italicized typeface that suggests movement and force. The characters are white and possess an aerodynamic flair, with the letter “J” extended backward as if being pushed by an unseen force. The “E” and “S” have a compact design, while the “T” stretches out with a horizontal bar that reinforces the horizon line concept.

The iconography of a jet is subtly integrated into the design, seamlessly passing through the upper part of the text and appearing as if it is taking off into the sky. The jet graphic is minimalist, with clean lines and a pronounced nose, indicative of speed and the team’s soaring aspirations. This pictorial element not only complements the text but also gives the logo a sense of layered depth, as the jet appears to be emerging from the background.

Contained within an oval shape, the deep green backdrop evokes the team’s heritage and provides a lush contrast to the white text and imagery. The oval’s perimeter is perfectly aligned with the outer contours of the letters and the jet, creating a contained and balanced emblem. This logo is a powerful amalgamation of tradition and modernity, conveying a message of relentless drive, unity, and the exhilarating rush of competition. It stands as a bold declaration of the team’s identity and its relentless pursuit of excellence both on and off the field.

Emblem

Font

The ‘NY’ and ‘Jet’ wordmarks are still there. The former is written in a joined-up fashion; the latter is written in white capitals and in a somewhat slimmer font.

Helmet

The helmets and uniform of the New York Jets look very elegant due to the unique color palette, based on a deep and calm shade of green, something between forest green and moss green. This is the main color of the helmet, with a glossy texture, supported by a dark grille, and a white enlarged logo on the sides, where the heavy lettering is placed above the small football. The helmets look very unusual and strong.

Uniform

The official color palette of the New York Jets is composed of three colors, Gotham green, spotlight white, and stealth black, which brilliantly work together, making up the different designs of the club’s uniforms. The first, color, option features a green jersey with white pants, and small geometric details in the same shades, with black, used only for the mask on the helmet. The white uniform is complemented by green pants and has the same style of decorative elements. As for the alternate uniform, it is fully black, with a white number and small green details.

Home ground

Since 2010 New York Jets have been playing at MetLife Stadium, which was opened as New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey and has a capacity of 82,500 seats. Before that, the Jets played in the home arena of their main competitor, Giants Stadium, which lasted for more than two decades.

From the middle of the 1960s to the middle of the 1980s, the home ground of the New York Jets was Shea Stadium, and the very first arena of the team — was Polo Grounds.

Colors

The current Jets logo uses a different shade of green: the early Kelly-green background has turned forest-green.

Did the New York Jets change their logo?
The New York Jets club has changed its logo several times throughout the years. The badge of the club has been redesigned six times, however, only the first redesign, in 1964, can be called a dramatic one. This is when the solid green plane with white lettering was replaced by a horizontally oriented rugby ball in green and white.

When did the Jets change their logo?
The New York Jets have changed their logo several times, with the latest redesign held in 2019, and the first one — in 1964. And if the first redesign was a major one, with a complete change of the concept from an aircraft to a rugby ball, the last one was all about color palette and contours.

Why are the New York Jets called the Jets?
The name of the club, the New York Jets, was chosen by David Abraham “Sonny” Werblin, the owner of the franchise. There were two main reasons he came up with the “Jets” name. First of all, it rhymes with Mets (the New York Mets club), the main competitor of the franchise, which played in the same stadium. Secondly, the stadium of the Jets was located near LaGuardia Airport, so the name supported the “aviation” theme.

What is the New York Jets slogan?
The most famous slogan of the New York Jets is “Play Like a Jet”, a phrase, which has been with the club for years. As for the favorite battle cry of the team’s fans, it is the famous “J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!” song, which is considered to be one of the most iconic fan songs of all time.
