Meaning and History

Morehouse College’s history dates back to 1867 when it was founded by Rev. William J. White, a Baptist minister and abolitionist. When the college moved to Atlanta a little over ten years later, it was renamed from Augusta Institute to Atlanta Baptist Seminary. Three years later, it got the name Atlanta Baptist College, and finally, in 1913, it became Morehouse College. The name honored Henry L. Morehouse, a prominent Baptist minister and supporter of the college. It was in 1957 that Morehouse College received full accreditation from SACS. With a rich history and a strong sense of purpose, it is poised to continue its legacy of producing leaders who will shape the world for generations to come.

1913 – Today

The name takes the key position in the logo, with “Morehouse” printed in significantly larger font and “College” added right below. The designer chose a bold, sans-serif font with clean lines and straight cuts. The logo also has a brown building added in a circle next to the name. It is the Graves Hall at Morehouse College, which has been a beacon of pride for the college community. The tower’s Gothic architecture also pays homage to the rich history and tradition of the college, evoking a sense of timelessness.

Font and Color

The logo uses a sophisticated serif font, similar to the one used by many other educational institutions. Adobe Arabic Regular font and Garamond 96 DT SemiBold font are two classic fonts with serifs that give them that traditional and formal feel.

The colors maroon and white evoke a sense of tradition, loyalty, and academic excellence. The maroon tone represents the passion, energy, and leadership of the institution, while the white symbolizes the pursuit of knowledge, truth, and wisdom.
