Meaning and History

Mellow Mushroom was founded in 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia, by two college students, Mike and Richard “Mick” McHugh, and their friend, Frank K. “Buddy” Lemen. They aimed to create a casual and fun dining experience that combined high-quality food with a laid-back atmosphere. The original location in Atlanta gained popularity, leading to the opening of additional locations throughout the southeastern United States. In the 1980s and 1990s, Mellow Mushroom began franchising, leading to rapid growth. In 2008, Mellow Mushroom was acquired by the private equity firm, Salsarita’s Franchise Group; however, it continued to operate independently. It operates hundreds of locations across the U.S.

1974 – Today

The logo reflects the distinctive brand image. The brand name is printed in a fun and energetic yellow with a thin red and black outline to create contrast and make it look even more powerful. The stroke baseline has a wavy shape that hints at the unique and entertaining atmosphere at the establishment. “Pizza baker” is added in the lower right corner as a tagline. The name is accompanied by a mushroom character that is spinning pizza dough in its right hand and a “V” sign hand gesture (victory or peace) with its left. The mushroom is placed on a second “o” in the “Mushroom and fills the empty upper right corner.

1984 – 2023

The introduction of black, which is used for the brand name, has added a new dimension to the logo. The name is printed using two different fonts, showing that one will never get bored at Mellow Mushroom. The upper line features a handwritten cursive font, while the bottom is printed using a bracketed slab serif font and all caps. The yellow is still part of the logo but now it is used solely for the mushroom. It now grew feet and stands in from of the inscription. The Mushroom has a very satisfied expression. It is no wonder since it has a huge piece of pepperoni pizza in its hand that leaves no one indifferent.

2023 – Today

The company brought back wavy strokes, thicker and rounded letters, and the “Pizza Bakers” tagline. However, this is not what grabs the attention in this logo. It is the new purple color palette and transformation of a cheerful mushroom character into a drawing of a mushroom without any human-like features. This update did not take away from the unique charisma of the restaurant, although many loyal fans surely miss the yellow smiling mushroom. It is obvious that the company wants to attract the attention of a new generation and stay in line with modern trends without losing its identity.

Font and Color

Thick and rounded strokes in the original logo create a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. The logo introduced in 1984 uses a cursive font that resembles ATBrophy Script font and KindandRich font for the “Mellow” part and Oklahoma Deputy font for the “Mushroom” part. The updated logo in 2023 uses a font similar to Casual Crew Bold font or Olivier Extended RC Regular by Ursula Hitz font for the “Mellow” part and Madero Slab Condensed Bold font or ITC Lubalin Graph Std Condensed Demi font for the “Mushrooms” part.

Initially, the main color in the logo was yellow, which is traditionally been a symbol of joyfulness, happiness, and energy. It perfectly matched the vibe at the restaurant. Later, the company added black to create a more sophisticated look and a feeling of depth. In 2023, it introduced a new color palette with purple being the main color. Besides being associated with royalty, luxury, and power, this color represents creativity, independence, mystery, and magic.
