Meaning and history

The inception of the Long Beach State 49ers traces back to the founding of California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) in 1949. Established alongside the university, the 49ers athletic department rapidly became an integral part of CSULB’s identity, fostering a vibrant sports culture.

Over the decades, the 49ers have carved out a distinguished place in collegiate sports. In the realm of baseball, they earned the moniker “The Dirtbags,” a testament to their gritty, determined play. This team has consistently shone in the College World Series and has been a breeding ground for future Major League Baseball stars. In men’s volleyball, the 49ers have scaled the heights of success, claiming several national championships and showcasing exceptional talent and teamwork. The women’s basketball and softball teams, too, have made their mark, demonstrating prowess in NCAA tournaments and elevating the university’s athletic profile.

What is Long Beach State 49ers?
The Long Beach State 49ers are the embodiment of athletic spirit at California State University, Long Beach, competing in NCAA Division I. Renowned for their dynamic baseball, volleyball, basketball, and softball teams, they have etched their name in collegiate sports history through championship triumphs and the development of accomplished athletes.

1973 – 1991

While the teams’ official colors, black and gold, was present on the Long Beach State 49ers logo as early as in 1973, the surface occupied by them has not been the same. The earlier logo was dominated by gold.

1992 – Today

On the following versions, 1992 and 2013, as well as the current one, most of the Long Beach State 49ers logo has been black. The yellow has been left for the thin outline.

Basketball

The women’s team has appeared in the NCAA Tournament Final Four on two occasions. They have made it to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight on five occasions and to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen on eight occasions. The number of appearances in the NCAA Tournament Second round has reached eight, while the number of the NCAA Tournament Appearances has reached 18. Also, the 49ers have become Conference Tournament Champions five times and got the title of the Conference Regular Season Champions on over 20 occasions. The success of the men’s team has been comparable to these results.
