To understand the meaning of the La Salle Explorers logo, one needs to know how the name of the athletic program appeared. It was a result of a mistake made by a local sportswriter. He called the team of La Salle University in Philadelphia “La Salle Explorers” assuming that the school was named after the explorer Sieur de La Salle. Although he was wrong, the name caught on.
La Salle Explorers, a prominent athletic program, was founded by La Salle University located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The university itself was established by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in 1863. This program is a testament to the university’s long-standing commitment to athletics and education. Over the years, the Explorers have made significant strides in various sports, especially in men’s basketball. Their most notable achievement is the 1954 NCAA Basketball Championship, a landmark victory that solidified their place in collegiate sports history. Additionally, they have made several appearances in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, further highlighting their competitive prowess.
In recent years, the La Salle Explorers have continued to maintain a strong presence in collegiate athletics, competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Their current position reflects a blend of historical legacy and modern competitive spirit. They continue to foster excellence in their athletes, contributing not only to the university’s reputation but also to the larger narrative of college sports in the United States. Their commitment to athletic and academic excellence remains a cornerstone of their identity, keeping the spirit of the Explorers alive and thriving.
What is La Salle Explorers?
La Salle Explorers is the name of the athletic program from the La Salle University, which is located in Philadelphia, USA. The program is best known for its football club, but also has men and women teams in such kinds of sport as Basketball, Tennis, Swimming, Water Polo, and others.
The exploration theme has been reflected in the old logo used from 1988 to 1996 and in the current one (used since 2004).
However, the La Salle Explorers logo used in 1997-2003 did not make any reference to it.
The redesign of 2004 introduced a new badge for La Salle Explorers. It was a combination of the original version and the logo of 1988. The new emblem is executed in blue, yellow, and white color palette and is composed of an arched inscription with “La Salle” in yellow and “Explorers” in white set on the bottom line, and a graphical part on top of the logo. The graphical part of the emblem featured a portrait of a man in profile. The man is turned to the left, wearing a tricorne hat with a large feather in it, and watching into a spyglass.
The list of achievements of the men’s basketball team includes 12 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, 12 appearances in the National Invitation Tournament, and about twenty players in the NBA. The head coach is Ashley Howard.
The women’s team appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 1987, 1988, and 1989, and 1992.
