Meaning and history

 

The Grand Canyon Antelopes, an athletic division of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, were founded as the university’s official athletic program. Grand Canyon University itself was established in 1949, but the exact inception date of the athletic program is intertwined with the university’s growth. Over the years, the Grand Canyon Antelopes have carved a niche in NCAA Division I sports, particularly gaining recognition for their basketball, soccer, and baseball teams.

The program’s main achievements are noteworthy, especially in basketball. The men’s basketball team has garnered significant attention, achieving multiple postseason appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament. This success has not only boosted the profile of Grand Canyon University but also significantly contributed to the growth of collegiate sports in the region. Their baseball team, too, has made considerable strides, consistently ranking high in their conference and making appearances in regional tournaments.

Currently, the Grand Canyon Antelopes continue to strengthen their position in NCAA Division I sports. What is Grand Canyon Antelopes?
The Grand Canyon Antelopes are the athletic teams representing Grand Canyon University in NCAA Division I sports. They compete in a range of sports, showcasing talent and sportsmanship at a high competitive level.

2005 – 2012

On the Grand Canyon Antelopes logo unveiled in 2005, the violet antelope was running and looked as if the lettering “Lopes” was a heavy weight on its back.

2013 – 2014

In 2013, the lettering moved below the antelope, which was redrawn from scratch.

2015 – Today

In 2015, the team replaced the mascot with the inanimate lettering “GCU.” Similar to its predecessors, the current Grand Canyon Antelopes logo is violet on the white background.

Grand Canyon Antelopes basketball

The men’s team has competed in ten NCAA Division II Tournaments, 11 NAIA Tournaments, three Division I CIT Tournaments, and two Division I CBI Tournaments. They won their first game in the WAC Tournament in the spring of 2018.

Grand Canyon Antelopes baseball

The baseball team representing Grand Canyon University is coached by Andy Stankiewicz. Their home arena is the on-campus Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark. Until 2018 when they joined Division I, the Lopes could qualify neither for the WAC Tournament nor for the NCAA Tournament. They have got four NAIA baseball titles.
