Giant Eagle, Inc. owns corporate-owned and independent supermarkets throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, northern West Virginia, and Maryland, as well as three car washes and eight drugstores in these same states.

Meaning and history

Although the history of the Giant Eagle supermarket chain dates back to 1918, the company was not officially incorporated until mid-1931. A company called Eagle Grocery was founded by three families from Pittsburgh: the Goldsteins, Porters, and Chaits. And within a decade Eagle Grocery merged with the larger Kroger, and in another three years with OK Grocery. That’s how Giant Eagle came to be. And today the Giant Eagle company is one of the top 75 retailers in North America.

Giant Eagle is a very progressive company. Back in 2019, the supermarket chain began introducing Tally, Simbe Robotics robots that scan items on the shelves, estimate the number of items, and identify products out of place or turned at the wrong angle. Additional information allows the management of retail chains to choose the optimal design of shelves and their filling, as well as to optimize pricing.

What’s more, Giant Eagle plans to eliminate the use of single-use plastic by 2025 and is already successfully using reusable bags and paper food containers in most of its supermarkets.

What is Giant Eagle?
Giant Eagle is the name of an American supermarket chain founded in 1918 in Pennsylvania. Today, the company owns nearly 500 locations across the country. These include not only grocery stores, but also pharmacies and car washes.

In terms of visual identity, Giant Eagle is neat and simple. Its bright and stable emblem perfectly represents the trustful and reliable company, which works for people.

1933 – 2019

The original Giant Eagle logo, designed in 1933, featured a solid red banner with arched horizontal edges and rounded angles, and a bold white uppercase inscription in a geometric sans-serif typeface with both “G”s slightly enlarged. This badge was used by the company for the most part of its history.

2019 – 2020

The logo of the supermarket chain was first redesigned only in 2019. The color palette remained red and white, but the shade of red darkened up and softened. Now the lettering is written in the lowercase of a bold modern sans-serif typeface, in two levels against a white background. This badge is still used by the company in tandem with the newer one.

2020 – Today

The redesign of 2020 has added a graphical emblem to the logotype from 2019, keeping the style of the lettering unchanged. Now the inscription is written in one line under a delicate green image with two leaves. The secondary version of the logo features a solid red roundel with a white lowercase “G” on it and a small green leaf in the top right part, making it look like an apple.

Font and color

The bold and clean lowercase lettering from the primary logo of the Giant Eagle supermarket chain is set in a modern geometric sans-serif typeface, which is very similar to ITC Avant Garde Gothicreg Paneuropean, or SHAPIRIT but with minor modifications.

As for the color palette of the Giant Eagle’s visual identity, it is based on the red, white, and green tricolor, which looks bright, warm, and memorable.
