The first international match the English played just with the Scots in 1872. So the national team’s history may be counted from the formation of the team in 1963, as well as from the first match, in 1972.

What is England Team?

England Team is the national football team, which represents the country at the international championships. The team won the World Cup in 1966, the only time in history, and has never won a European Championship, which makes it the only world champion without a win in its continental competition.

1879 – 1950

The logo used at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the next resembled a shield with a crown on top and three lions stacked one on top of the other. Both the lions and the crown were always associated with royalty. The lions are also a symbol of courage and strength. The emblem was done in dark blue and red, which supported the loyalty, trust, power, and bravery symbolism.

1950 – 1993

The logo acquired a more artistic look thanks to the addition of ten red flowers between the lions and a more detailed drawing of these animals. One important detail was no longer seen in the logo as the team ceased to use a crown. In a way, a powerful red color was simply used in the form of flowers.

1993 – 1999

The lions were redrawn again and given a lot more intricate design with beautiful swirls. They were now a sky blue color and had red tongues and claws, which gave them a devilish appearance. The white color of the shield with a black outline was a perfect background. Under the shield, they added “England”. The inscription was done using all uppercase letters of a black color with serifs that added a classic touch.

1999 – 2003

An introduction of a dark blue which replaced the sky blue gave the logo a bolder and stronger feel. The inscription was moved above the shield and given a wide rectangular background of a dark blue color. This move made it part of the logo rather than making it look like it was an afterthought.

2003 – 2009

The club brought a different, lighter shade of blue to the logo. The whole logo appeared to have a simpler design as the lions were drawn with less and the font no longer had serifs. Instead, the letters were made bolder and larger with less spacing in between. The flowers also looked different.

2009 – 2012

The only major change done in 2009 was the removal of a horizontal bar with “England” written across. The other elements did not have any noticeable modifications.

2012 – 2013

For a relatively short period of time, the club used a red-and-white color palette. The white was used for the background and outlines, while the lions, flowers, and shield border were done in red. It was a bold choice and made the club look strong and powerful.

The Crest History

In terms of visual identity, the England National Football Team uses a crest, which is a tribute to the history of the country, as it’s is fully based on the seal of King Richard I, who reined England just for ten years, at the end of the 1100s, and knows as Richard the Lionheart.

The Lion is historically one of the most common heraldic symbols, which was used by many rulers and knights, as a symbol of courage, royalty, and loyalty. The lions were placed on the coats of arms to represent noble status and fearlessness.

And the logo of the England football team features an image of three lions on a heraldic shield. Perhaps this is the most recognizable soccer symbol in the world of national teams, and the English team itself is traditionally called “The Three Lions”.

English soccer players are wearing three lions on his chest since the first international match – a game against the Scots, held in 1872. The emblem of the England national team is the logo of the Football Association.

Richard the Lionheart began to use three golden lions on a scarlet background as a symbol of monarchy. The lions were depicted in a horizontal stand, which is also called lions passant guardant. Since then, many monarchs have used this symbol.

Until 1949 the badge of the English National team was decorated with a massive crown, set above the three lions.

2013 – Today

The modern logo of the England National football team features a white crest with three blue lions passant guardant, placed one above another, and decorated with ten red and white roses, which are the Tudor roses, symbols of the reconciliation between the Yorks and the Lancasters, another well-known graphical symbol of the English history.

The blue, white, and red color palette of the England National team crest is a classic heraldic tricolor, standing for freedom, loyalty, and courage.
