Meaning and history

Bratz is one of the most successful brands of toys in the world. It was founded in 2001 and became the leader in sales in literally no time. The brand, owned by MGA Entertainment (Micro Games of America), is specialized in the production of 24,5 cm tall dolls with bright make-up and fancy outfits.

Four original dolls, Jasmine, Chloe, Jade, and Sasha, were released in 2001, and Raya, was added as the fifth official Bratz in 2015. All dolls featured almond-shaped eyes adorned with eye shadow and blush, glossy lips.

In slang, the word “Brat” means “Annoying Child,” but the creators were not afraid of the negative perception of the brand. And it never happened. Bratz dolls became a real craze that has taken over the planet. When a new Bratz collection comes out, it’s almost impossible to buy it, as it literally evaporates off store shelves.

The product’s ingenious idea of girls with a passion for fashion makes it truly revolutionary in the doll world and the toy business. The target audience of Bratz dolls is the age segment of girls from 8 to 13 years old, who are no longer playing in the classic dolls and puppets.

Bratz dolls are the product that brings growing girls closer to them so appealing to the world of fashion in all its details and accessories. The main idea of the brand and the message of the target audience is contained in all details of the product, including the packaging and the logo, which, like everything in it, are designed with a high degree of creativity, a sense of style, and the latest fashion trends.

The Bratz dolls are made entirely of vinyl: hard vinyl is used for the dolls’ heads, softer vinyl for the body, and bendable vinyl for the little hands and feet. The dolls’ heads, arms, and legs are all hinged. The Dolls have a fashionable closet, with garments and accessories copied from the latest designer collections. A variety of clothes and items allows girls from all over the world to not only develop their taste, and attention to detail, and learn to compose fashionable ensembles, but also to find new topics to communicate with each other, to collect and share. Constantly updated collections allow them to follow fashion trends, learn about the world of fashion and style, as well as fantasize and make their dreams come true.

The brand develops several directions: Bratz Boyz, Lil Bratz for young children, Bratz Petz, 4ever best friends, and Bratz Babyz. Within each direction each season there are new themed collections released.

What is Bratz?
Bratz is an American toy brand, which specialised in the production of fashionable dolls for girls in the age category of 8 to 13. The Bratz dolls are known for their bright make-up and fancy outfits, which made the brand one of the world’s leaders in the toy market.

In terms of visual identity, Bratz has always used a custom stylized logotype as the main element of the insignia. Executed in a very girly pink color palette, the inscription has changed several styles and fonts, and in the end returned to its original version, created in 2001.

2001 – 2009

The very first Bratz badge, designed in 2001, has been in use by the doll brand for more than seven years. It was an uppercase gradient pink logotype with each of the bold fancy letters outlined in thin gold. The thin golden Halo symbol was placed above the “R” in the inscription, and the whole badge was decorated with small golden stars.

2007

The redesign of 2007 has introduced a glossy lowercase logotype, with the neat cursive typeface of the bold stable letters. The inscription was set diagonally, in the up-right direction, with the halo executed in the same pink, as all of the characters of the wordmark.

2010 – 2012

In 2010 another Bratz logo was created for the American toy brand, based on the original version from 2001.It was almost the same logo, but in a darker and brighter color palette, and with the letters more flat than voluminous. Also, the thin golden outline of the ink capital letters got complemented by black, which made the whole composition look brighter.

2012

The Alternative variant of the Bratz logo was introduced in 2012 and featured an uppercase inscription in the brand’s original typeface, but was set in a flat two-dimensional style and a different color palette. Actually, there were two options for the color scheme in this version: gradient pink letters on a dark purple background, or a sparkling golden inscription with each character outlined in pink and black.

2013 – 2014

The redesign of 2013 has simplified and strengthened the Bratz badge, drawing it in black lines and placing it on a white background. It was a title case inscription in a custom smooth font with rounded lines and extended letters. The Halo symbol moved a bit to the right, coving half of the “R” and half of the “A”, and got thicker and more visible now.

2015 – 2017

The original design of the Bratz logo returned in 2015, with the color palette changed to purple and white, and the golden Halo overlapping the capital letter “R” in its top part. The halo was complemented by three small yellow stars, and the badge itself could be decorated with different symbols, depending on the collection.

2018 – Today

In 2018 the dolls manufacturer decides to get back to the original version of the logo, created in 2018. The badge fully repeats the initial badge in pink and gold, with gradient bodies of the letters, a sleek golden outline, and tiny golden stars with the golden halo, adding elegance and individuality to the logo.

Font and color

The Bratz logotype from the official insignia of the brand is written in a custom sans-serif typeface with capital letters featuring bold lines, sharp angles, and elongated tails. The jumping disposition of the characters is supported by the interesting shapes, folds, and curves of the lines.

As for the color palette of the Bratz visual identity, it is based on pink and gold, with pink in several gradient shades, which makes the whole logo more vivid and fancy. Pink is the most feminine color, hence there is no surprise that the world’s leader in dolls production has chosen it for its logo. The thin golden details make everything more elegant and add a very sophisticated touch to the whole badge.
