Blushing from embarrassment is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system. It works involuntarily, meaning you don’t think about blushing. When you are embarrassed, your body releases adrenaline. This hormone acts as a natural stimulant and has several effects on the body at once: it increases our breathing and heart rate to prepare us to flee from danger or an unpleasant situation. It causes our pupils to dilate so we can perceive as much visual information as possible, slows down the digestive process so that energy can be redirected to the muscles, and causes blood vessels to dilate to improve blood flow and oxygen delivery. This is what causes the redness.
