Appalachian State Mountaineers are the sports teams of the University in North Carolina, USA. The athletic program is composed of 17 sports teams in various disciplines and includes Track&Field and Cross Country clubs, which is pretty rare.

Meaning and history

Appalachian State Mountaineers is a collegiate athletic program from Appalachian State University, a public educational institution in North Carolina, the United States. The university was established at the very end of the 19th century, in 1899, as Watauga Academy.

As the athletic program of the App State (one of the shortened names of the Appalachian State University), it is composed of 17 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, in various sports disciplines, including Baseball, Basketball, Football, Wrestling and several more.

1976 – 1986

The original logo of the Appalachian State Mountaineers Club, designed in 1976, featured a profile portrait of a bearded man in a hat, drawn in a yellow and black color palette with no additional lettering. It looked super cool and powerful for those times and stayed with the club for ten years.

1983 – 1989

Another version of the Beard Man emblem was introduced in 1983. This time it was drawn in a black-and-white palette, and the man looked more realistic than the one from the previous version, who looked a bit caricaturish. The shape of the hat was changed, getting more distinctive contours and sharp angles.

1989 – 1999

In 1989, the athletic program of the Appalachian State University adopted a large “A” as its primary logo. The letter was white with black and yellow outlines. Across its middle bar, the word “Mountaineers” in a type imitating handwriting was placed.

1999 – 2009

In 1999-2009, the Appalachian State Mountaineers logo featured the name of the team with a bearded head above.

2009 – 2012

The redesign of 2009 made the image of a man from the previous version the main and the only element of the club’s visual identity. It was drawn in the same style and color palette, as in 1999, but gained more gray strokes, which have created additional volume. The badge was only used by Appalachian State Mountaineers for three years.

2012 – 2013

In 2012, the “A” logo returned with a couple of subtle modifications.

The alternative Appalachian State Mountaineers logo appears to have more character and distinctiveness to it. Since 2014, it has featured the university’s mascot, Victory Yosef. In fact, Yosef made its first appearance in the 1942 edition of The Rhododendron.

2013 – Today

In 2013 the contours of the Appalachian State Mountaineers logo were strengthened and the shade of yellow, used for the “A” outline got darker. The black lines of the framing were emboldened, while the central part of the badge remained untouched.

Football

The first season dates back to 1928. Since 2014, the team has played in the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Sun Belt Conference. It plays its home games at the Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Basketball

The men’s team is coached by Jim Fox, as of 2019. The team competed in the NCAA Tournament in 1979 and 2000 and reached the National Invitation Tournament in 2007. The women’s team coached by Angel Elderkin won the 2011 and 1996 Southern Conference regular-season title.
