AND1 is dedicated exclusively to basketball. It is not just a clothing and footwear manufacturer, but it was also the brightest and most famous streetball team formed from the best street players. Although no longer existing, this gang traveled the world, collecting full halls and street courts of spectators. One of AND1’s significant contributions to basketball culture was the introduction of the “AND1 Mixtape” series, which showcased highlights of streetball games and streetball players, blending entertainment and sports. The brand’s popularity also came from the originality of the products as well as their simplicity and functionality. Many NBA stars, especially young ones, got a tattoo with the brand’s name.
AND 1 appeared on the American market in 1993. The creators are three friends, real basketball fans – Tom Austin, Seth Berger, and Jay Gilbert. AND1 has burst onto the sports market with a radical new product: trash-talking T-shirts on the basketball topic. During the first year, AND1 managed to sell its original products for about 1 million US dollars. Next, they introduced basketball shoes. Just 4 years later, sales began to grow so rapidly that the company’s annual profit amounted to 200 million dollars. So, the founders decided to take their products outside the United States. The name is basketball-inspired. If a player commits a foul while throwing the ball and the ball hits the basket, the throw will be counted, but the player will be sent to the so-called penalty area. This is called a throw +1 – AND1.
What is AND1?
AND1 is an American brand known for its models of sneakers for basketball and streetball. The brand has become a symbol of streetball and street culture. Although it did not outperform its competitors Nike and Addidas, the AND1 brand has become practically a leader in its field.
The updated logo consists of the word “AND1” in a stylized, uppercase font. The swoosh line that creates an oval frame that disappears in the lower right corner underlines the brand’s strong, athletic look. Despite the fact that there is no basketball player in the logo, it still embodies the spirit of street basketball. The dynamic design creates an association with both performance and lifestyle within the sport.
The brand’s name is done in bold, geometric lettering using all caps. The logo also incorporates a solid image of a basketball player in an active, running pose with a ball in his left hand. The player is drawn in white and placed in the lower right corner of an orange square with rounded corners. Both elemnets are frame with a black line to create a rectangular base with rounded corners.
The original color palette featured black and orange. The orange color is a perfect match for the dynamic sport the brand is all about. After all, orange is often associated with enthusiasm, energy, and vibrancy. When combined with orange, black creates a bold and striking visual that represents competitiveness and determination. It also gave the logo a professional and strong appearance. Thanks to a monochromatic black color scheme that was introduced recently, the overall design became sleek and modern.
The earlier logo version features a bold and geometric font. It resembles a slightly modified Hot Bleb font or Millenium Pro Extra Black font with a modern and futuristic style. Later, it was replaced by a modern, italicized, bold font that looks similar to UniversLTStd-XBlackExObl font and Linotype Univers 941 Extended ExtraBlack Italic font.
