What is Air Calédonie?
Air Calédonie is the domestic airline of New Caledonia, a French overseas territory in the South Pacific. It operates scheduled flights connecting the main island of New Caledonia, Nouméa, with several smaller islands in the archipelago. The airline plays a crucial role in providing essential transportation services to both residents and tourists visiting the region.
The original Air Caledonie logo, designed in 1954, was executed in a bright green, white, and black color palette. The concept of the badge was built around a solid green roundel, with a white plane, stylized like an arrow, drawn across it, and a wide vertical swoosh finishing the image. The black “Transpac” wordmark was written in all caps on the body of the arrow.
After the company was renamed Air Caledonie in 1968, a new logo was designed. This time the color scheme was based on the combination of light blue and orange. The stylized two-leveled inscription was the only element, with the sharp angular segment attached to the uppercase “A”, and the horizontal bar of the “A” was formed by the top part of the “C”.
Another version of the Air Caledonie badge was even more minimalistic. The bold lowercase “Aircal” wordmark was set in heavy and stable characters of a light turquoise shade against a plain white background without any graphical additions. The classy shapes of the extended characters were balanced by a super cool and eye-catching hue.
The redesign of 1980 has borrowed a wide traditional sans-serif typeface from the previous badge, but completely changed the composition and color palette of the Air Caledonie visual identity. The full name of the company in medium blue was now set under an emblem, which depicted a black fishbone element, placed vertically across a sunset-colored roundel, and reminding a tower.
In 2014 the unique and recognizable emblem of the air carrier remained almost untouched, just some of the lines got slightly elongated. As for the lettering part, it was rewritten in solid black with the new style of a sans-serif font, and an additional element — a slightly arched thin line and a motto of the Air Caledonie company set under it in small geometric caps.
