Meaning and History

AdAge was founded back in 1930 by William H. (Bill) McCarthy in Chicago. It originally served as a trade publication for the advertising industry. Over the years, the agency grew and began to cover a wider range of topics. As the internet began to transform the advertising landscape in the 1990s, Ad Age adapted its content and offerings. In 2004, the publication was acquired by Crain Communications Inc., a company that owns several other business publications and media properties. Its history reflects the dynamic changes in the advertising industry, evolving from a print magazine to a digital-age multifaceted platform.

1930 – ????

This design emphasizes clarity and professionalism, reflecting the brand’s focus on advertising and marketing industries. At first glance, the font looks quite basic. However, slanted cuts, a unique “g” loop, and slanted “e” make it quite unique without being overwhelming and busy.

???? – 2018

The updated logo looks fancier not only thanks to the addition of serifs but also the use of high stroke contrast. It is also worth noting that the two parts of the name have been joined, which added more distinctiveness to the brand image. To make the whole logo more balanced and not as long, the designer made the spacing between the characters very minimal. Since there are also fine strokes, the overall logo appearance is clean and readable.

2018 – Today

The AdAge logo features the new name “AdAge” in a bold, modern typeface. It still has no graphical elements or any other embellishments, preserving the original brand identity. The designer did not even change the color palette. Yet, the logo looks very different from the earlier version as the font gave it a very bold and confident look. Many of the character elements, including the straight cuts and “g” loop. This version looks more stylish and put together than any other logo it had earlier. It has a sense of authority and expertise in the field.

Font and Color

There are several fonts that have been seen in AdAge logos. The original version features a sans-serif font similar to Geometric 231 Bold font for Windows in TrueType or Koch Original font. The next logo used a serif font that resembles Jeles Condensed Bold font. A bold, sans-serif font that combines the NEXT Medium Book by Optimo SARL with the “g” character from the original version has been used in the logo introduced in 2018.

The black color, which is seen in all logo versions, conveys confidence and stability. It is a color that commands respect and attention. It gives the logo a polished and sophisticated overall look. Moreover, it is worth remembering that black is a classic color that can give a sense of timelessness to a brand.
