New York City is in the Top lists, if not the absolute leader, of almost all sectors of human activity. It is the personification of the modern world and the embodiment of its dreams. New York has everything: from slums of poor neighborhoods and street criminals to skyscrapers, billionaires, and bohemian events. New York is a success story of a tiny trading post that became the “capital of the world”. The city stands out with its technical infrastructure as the first metro line was opened in 1904 and later became one of the longest in the world. It also created the association of skyscrapers with wealth and prosperity.

Meaning and History

NYC Logo history

Since ancient times, the territory of modern New York was inhabited by Indians. The first European settlement on the historic land of the Lenape people was built in 1624 by 30 families who arrived as part of the Dutch West India Company’s trading projects. The governor purchased these lands from local tribes for a symbolic price. Thus, a little over 400 years ago, a small fort was founded on the western coast of the Atlantic Ocean, which no one predicted would have a long, much less unusual life. The city grew at a breakneck pace in the 19th century. Its oceanfront location encouraged significant immigration to New York. Since 1886, all arrivals to the town have been greeted by the Statue of Liberty, a gift to the American people from the French for the centenary of their fight for civil liberties. In the end, it developed into one of the largest megalopolises in the world.

What is NYC?
New York City is a symbol of the modern world, the era of contemporary history – with all its advantages, disadvantages, and charms. Throughout its history, the city has experienced many crises and disasters, but each time, like a Phoenix, it rose from the ashes. It rose to become one of the most powerful cities in the world.

1625 – Today

The NYC seal is a complex and meaningful emblem. In the very center, it has a blue shield with a golden frame. The shield has three elements (windmill, beavers, and flour barrels) that represent the city’s heritage. On either side of the shield, are two figures – a Native American and a settler. These are supposed to reflect a peaceful and productive coexistence. The very top is decorated with an eagle perched on a dome. It is a symbol of the great nation. At the bottom, the logo has a ribbon holding an inscription that says “Seal of the City of New York.” The foundation year and wreath from bay leaves (symbol of victory) complete the image.

2007 – Today

NYC Logo

Designed by Wolff Olins, this logo looks very minimalistic. Yet, it has a distinctive style that makes it easily identifiable. The letters are done using thick strokes for high visibility and a strong visual impression. The font choice is just as bold, featuring geometric characters that are set right next to each other. The logo is meant to reflect the unity and strength of the NYC community. There are no embellishments or decorative elements, which gives the logo an official and timeless feel.
