The University of North Carolina has several logotypes. In addition to the official seal, there are also such instantly recognizable emblems as the Old Well, the NC symbol, the Tar Heel foot, and the Strutting Ram.

The University Seal is based on a shield with a torch on each side. They are encircled with the full name of the school.

Old Well emblem

North Carolina emblem
One of the most well-known places at the UNC campus, the Old Well used to be the school’s only water source. In the late 1890s, the decrepit wooden construction was replaced by a beautiful rotunda. In this form, the Old Well became the school’s most enduring symbol.

Athletic symbols

The North Carolina Tar Heels team uses a variety of symbols. In addition to the interlocking letters “N” and “C” (primary logo), they also have an emblem depicting a ram in a hat with the letters “UNC” and a logotype depicting a foot with a round spot on the heel.


Font North Carolina Logo
Besides the serif all-cap type, in which almost all the words on the North Carolina logo are given, there is also an italic font used for the two prepositions.


Color North Carolina Logo
In addition to the two colors of the official UNC palette, Carolina blue and white, the emblem also features a darker shade of blue for the outline.
