Jersey Mike’s is an American sub sandwich chain known for its fresh ingredients and authentic submarine sandwiches. The menu features cold subs, hot subs, and a selection of sides, such as chips and drinks. One of their signature aspects is the “Mike’s Way” style of preparation, which includes lettuce, tomatoes, onions, oil, vinegar, and spices. In addition to its traditional sub offerings, Jersey Mike’s has expanded its menu to include wraps, salads, and gluten-free options.
Meaning and History
Peter Cancro, founder and chief executive officer of Jersey Mike’s, began working at the first Jersey Mike’s restaurant in New Jersey when he was 14 years old. He bought it in 1975 and started selling franchises in 1987. By the way, at that time he was still in high school, and, naturally, a schoolboy could not have any funds to buy a restaurant. His football coach, Rod Smith, who also worked as a banker, helped the guy get a loan of $150,000 to buy a diner. Turning down a scholarship, Pete spent seven days a week at the restaurant, training employees and improving the quality of products and service. Just a few years later, he opened a second establishment and also changed the name to Jersey Mike’s. The chain managed to overcome a three-year crisis caused by the 1990s recession, opened 3,000 restaurants across the US, and made charity its main tool for attracting customers.
What is Jersey Mike’s?
Jersey Mike’s is the second-largest sandwich chain in the United States, behind only Subway, with over 3,000 locations. From the very start, the restaurant specialized in Italian-style submarine sandwiches with freshly baked bread, deli meats, cheeses, and red wine sauce. The brand’s commitment to community involvement and philanthropy also helped establish a positive reputation.
1987 – 2004
The logo has a hand-drawn, casual style, giving it a friendly and approachable appearance. It was designed to reflect the new name of the chain – Jersey Mike’s Subs. The first word is done using a fine cursive font, while the rest of the inscription is printed using a bold, rounded font without serifs. The word “Subs” is done using all caps. Such a difference in fonts gave the logo a dynamic look and placed different accents on each word. The inscription is done in blue with contrasting red lines above and below. At the bottom, it had a tagline that said “Authentic Subs Since 1956” using a rounded font of red color and all caps.
2004 – Today
The updated logo has a lot in common with the previous version. First of all, the color palette has not changed. Secondly, it features the same font used for the “Mike’s” in that logo. The new design has an oval shape with a blue base and a red and white thin border. The name was split between three lines with the accent being placed on the first two words. The latter are done in red with a thin white outline. The designer has removed the tagline and instead added “Since 1956” in the small, white print above the name. The logo turned out well put together, noticeable, and memorable.
Font and Color
The 1987 logo features a combination of several fonts. There is a bold, elegant, cursive font that looks like Murray Hill D Bold font, as well as a bold, rounded, and playful font that resembles Bumpo Soft Narrow font. The tagline is printed using a bold, rounded font without serifs similar to Tekton Bold font. Since 2004, the logo has used a font that resembles a classic Futura font with “Subs” printed using a font similar to Grilled Cheese.
The color palette mainly features blue and red with splashes of white. These colors do a great job of catching the attention and projecting an image of a trustworthy and strong brand. In addition, these colors are patriotic and hint at the American roots of the brand.
