Fans of alternative music are familiar with the name of the American band Deftones, which combines styles and trends such as heavy metal, art rock, post-punk, trip-hop, and psychedelia in their work. Such diversity is due to constant creative experiments, boldly going beyond the boundaries of a certain genre and revealing the personal emotions of the performers, not tied to any external factors and boundaries. Their first album was influenced by metal giants such as Black Sabbath and Metallica. Deftones brought a new heavy metal sound to the masses. Over the years, the band has released studio albums written under the influence of modern representatives of non-standard art and based on the works of The Cure, Depeche Mode, and Duran Duran.

Meaning and History

Deftones Logo history

Deftones, a band formed in the late 80s in California, began as a friendship between Chino Moreno and Abe Cunningham, both skateboarding enthusiasts. Chino’s friend Steven Carpenter was hit by a car and, finding himself in a wheelchair, mastered the guitar. The band began playing in small clubs in Sacramento and eventually signed with Maverick Records in 1994. Their debut album, Adrenaline, was met with positive reviews and steady sales. The band toured extensively, playing with artists like Korn, Ozzy Osbourne, and L7. In 1997, they recorded their second album, Around the Fur, featuring DJ Frank Delgado. The album sold even more copies than Adrenaline and cemented Deftones’ status as an underground sensation. Since then, it released new albums and successfully toured the world. The name itself was formed from the slang word for “outstanding” and the music term “tones”.

The logo is a distinctive and stylized representation of the band’s name. It was first presented on the cover of the band’s debut album cover. The emblem features a cursive, elegant font with smooth strokes that emphasizes a sense of depth and movement. The characters are all lowercase, which makes the logo appealing to a wider audience. The contrasting stroke thickness perfectly reflects that blend of different music styles. The design is a reflection of the band’s artistic approach to their music and the emotional depth of their compositions.

The new logo is bold and modern. Thick strokes, uppercase characters, and minimal spacing between the characters create a striking and provocative impression. The new design shows that the band is evolving and has already established its style and image. At the same time, it lost its unique identity that the original logo was meant to reflect. This version was presented on the cover of their fifth album and has been used since then alongside the original one.

Both logo versions are done in black with a neutral white base. The fact that the logos still look relevant proves that this is a classic and timeless color palette. It also gives the logo a professional look and stands for the bold rock music.

The original logo uses an elegant cursive font that features flowing, cursive letterforms with a classic and sophisticated style. It resembles Coronet LT Std Bold font and Ribbon 131 Bold font.  A bold, geometric font with a modern style was introduced in 2006. It resembles a bold, sans-serif font called Selecta Black font.
